Leadership

The climate and nature emergency must be the highest priority for the Mayor and Strategic Authority

People and nature will not thrive unless the emergencies are addressed

Make sure every decision is good for the climate, nature and future generations

To get fast effective action, we call on the Mayor to demonstrate leadership

A lead on climate and nature

Make one person responsible for leading on climate and nature at the highest level – a Deputy Mayor, Commissioner or non-executive voting member of the Combined Strategic Authority

Relevant professional knowledge

Make sure someone with relevant professional knowledge has a seat round the table when the Mayor and combined authority take decisions that affect climate or nature. Consider the creation of a ‘Climate and Nature Commission’

Sussex strategies and action plans

Set strategies and action plans that are aligned to legally binding UK timetable and commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change; and reverse wildlife decline

Annual targets

Set annual targets for emissions reduction, for local renewable energy generation and for enhancement of biodiversity. Report progress towards these targets every six months

Bring people together

Bring organisations, business and residents together to take action on the climate and nature to achieve the targets. Strengthen engagement through forums, partnerships, citizens assemblies, etc.
