Our Vision

In 2050, people in Sussex are living happy, healthy lives in strong communities in harmony with nature and natural resources. 

The Mayor and local authorities have been able to work together to create plans that make sense for the whole of Sussex, thanks to the devolution of national powers and the creation of unitary councils. 

This has reinvigorated our sense of place and identity. A healthy, happy and thriving population, taking pride in the place they call home. 

Economic, social and environmental needs are in balance. The economy is thriving, sustainable and equitable. 

We’ve reversed the decline in nature and increased biodiversity. Everyone has easy access to green space, and enjoys good quality air and water.

People feel safe from over-reliance on global chains for the basics of energy and food production.

Clean and affordable energy to heat and power homes and businesses is produced locally and renewably. 

Food is healthy and affordable. A good proportion of the food we eat and products we buy come from within Sussex.

A well-connected and affordable public transport system means we grab our travel pass as we leave the house more often than we reach for the car keys. Alternatives to driving are popular and safe, and lead to better public health and well-being. 

Energy efficient homes and workplaces are warm in winter and cool in summer. We cope better with floods and heatwaves, thanks to a mix of technological and nature-based solutions. 

Residents, organisations and businesses have come together to address the challenges associated with a changing climate and nature’s decline, working to adapt to a new world in the second half of the 21st century. 

People are optimistic about their prospects and have confidence that future generations will continue to thrive. Our young people are hopeful for the future.
